St. Kitts and Nevis Launches Preparations for Seventh National BiodiversityReport with Multi-Stakeholder Workshops
Basseterre, St Kitts, 11 May 2026 – The Department of Environment, with help of the United
Nations Development Programme (UNDP), has begun work on Saint Kitts and Nevis’ Seventh
National Report (7NR) regarding biodiversity. The effort started with workshops held from May
6 to 8, 2026, led by National Reporting Analyst, Ambar Espaillat.
This important project is part of a larger global initiative funded by the Global Environment
Facility (GEF) which aims to help countries improve their strategies for protecting nature and
prepare their 7NRs. The Report will depict Saint Kitts and Nevis’ progress with achieving the
goals of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF), which was adopted
in December 2022.
This progress will be assessed based on 23 global targets which connect with key environmental
and social issues, focusing on areas like restoring ecosystems, adapting to climate change,
promoting sustainable farming, reducing pollution, and ensuring equality for all genders.
In line with the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the Department of Environment will
engage input from a range of technical sources including stakeholder groups, working groups,
previous reports, government policies, and community feedback. This approach helps to improve
coordination, data collection, and monitoring of biodiversity in the Federation. This process
connects with Saint Kitts and Nevis’ role as President of the Escazú Agreement as it directly
aligns with Agreement’s principles, which promote public access to environmental information
and encourage wide scale participation in environmental decision-making – ensuring effective
protection for those who advocate for the environment.
Ambar Espaillat stated, “The Seventh National Report is not just a requirement; it’s a valuable
chance for us to review what we’ve achieved, recognize challenges, and create a clear plan to
protect biodiversity in Saint Kitts and Nevis. We want everyone to participate actively in this
process.”
The completion of the 7NR will ensure improved coordination among biodiversity stakeholders,
a unified source of national biodiversity information, and a strategic plan to help Saint Kitts and
Nevis stop and reverse the loss of biodiversity by 2030.
As efforts continue, the Department of Environment and UNDP is working alongside all partner
government agencies, community organizations, businesses, and knowledgeable individuals to
integrate their contributions to this process.
