Government Advances Water Security as Trinidad and Tobago Firm Begins Local Drilling Program

Basseterre, Saint Kitts, February 18, 2026 (PMO): The Government of Saint Kitts and Nevis continues to accelerate its national water security strategy, with a Trinidad and Tobago-based company currently on island conducting exploratory drilling at multiple sites.

Prime Minister, Hon Dr. Terrance Drew confirmed during yesterdays, February 17th, Round Table that the drilling exercise forms part of a broader, multi-layered approach to guarantee 24/7 potable water access across the Federation. 

“We have contracted a company from Trinidad and Tobago who is now presently drilling, right now they are in Saddlers,” the Prime Minister said, noting that approximately ten sites have been identified for assessment. 

The drilling initiative complements the Government’s major investment in the newly completed publicly owned desalination plant, which is currently producing two million gallons of potable water per day and is scheduled for official commissioning on February 24.

The Prime Minister stressed that his administration does not intend to return to a time when communities face inconsistent water supply.

“We do not intend to ever go back to a place where people cannot have 24/7 water,” he affirmed. 

The $60 million desalination investment, according to Prime Minister Drew, along with new well development and infrastructure upgrades, forms a core component of the Sustainable Island State Agenda, particularly under its water security pillar.

Prime Minister Drew also encouraged citizens to support national efforts by remaining compliant with water bill payments, explaining that revenues collected are reinvested directly into improving and maintaining the water system.

“We subsidize water heavily. When you pay your water bill, the Government does not make a profit. The Government uses that money to reinvest in you.” 

The Government remains committed to long-term infrastructure resilience and sustainable resource management for present and future generations.
