The 2022 Sir Probyn Inniss Memorial Lecture
The University of the West Indies Open Campus, St. Kitts and Nevis in
partnership with the History and Heritage Month Committee, will host the 5th
Sir Probyn Inniss Memorial Lecture on March 23rd at 7 pm.
For the second year running, the lecture will be delivered online. The audience
is invited to join and participate in the discussion via the Open Campus Facebook
page and Youtube Channel.
The topic for this year’s lecture is Cultural Opportunities and Challenges in a
Post-Covid 19 World. The presenter will be Dr Deborah Hickling Gordon, a
lecturer in Cultural Studies at The University of the West Indies, Institute of
Caribbean Studies, Mona Campus.
The History and Heritage Lecture was renamed the Sir Probyn Inniss Memorial
Lecture in 2018, following the death of Sir Probyn in March 2017. This change
recognises the sterling contribution Sir Probyn made to the preservation and
documentation of our local history and culture. History and Heritage Month was
his brainchild. Sir Probyn served as Governor of the Associated State of St. Kitts-
Nevis-Anguilla and then of St. Kitts and Nevis from 1975-1981.
The past speakers to date for the Memorial Lecture have been:
2018 Dr. Whitman Brown
2019 Prince Frimpong Addai
2020 Dr. Bichara Sahely
2021 Prof. J Peter Figueroa
This year’s topic is expected to attract a wide and diverse audience from the
Federation and the wider Caribbean.
